Step 2: The right place and the perfect time
Plant dahlia tubers after the last frost period, usually around mid-May (after Ice Saints). Dahlias like a sunny spot with at least 6 hours of sunlight per day.
Want to advance flowering? Start by forcing dahlia tubers in pots in March or April. This protects them from snails and gives them a head start on the season.
Step 3: Planting Dahlia Tubers Correctly
Follow these simple steps:
1. Dig a hole 2-3 cm deep.
2. Place the dahlia tuber with the stem facing up.
3. Keep a distance of 40-50 cm between the tubers.
Do you want to plant dahlia tubers in a pot? Use a maximum of one tuber per pot. Does the pot have a diameter of more than 45 cm? Then a maximum of three tubers will fit in it.
Step 4: Covering and fertilizing the tubers
Cover the tubers with soil and add organic fertilizer for optimal growth. Water immediately after planting. Provide well-drained soil to prevent root rot.
Step 5: Care for long-lasting flowering
Within a few weeks the first shoots will appear and the flowers will follow until the first frost.
• Provide extra water during dry periods, but avoid wet feet.
• The more often you cut flowers, the more new flowers will appear.
Protect young shoots from slugs to encourage healthy growth.
Step 6: Support your dahlias for strong growth
When your dahlias grow large, support them with a sturdy stick and tie the stems loosely. This will prevent them from blowing over in strong winds.
