The name comes from the Swedish botanist Elia Tillands, who, like the Tillandsia, hated water. The plants are native to the forests, deserts and mountains of South and Central America. Almost all Tillandsia are epiphytes, which means that they have little or no roots but grow on trees or rocks. Water and nutrients are absorbed from the air through the scales on the leaves, which is why Tillandsias are often called air plants.
